Are Hair Transplants Permanent?

Hair transplantation entails the extraction of permanent hair follicles from the occipital scalp and subsequent implantation of those healthy hair follicles into recipient areas exhibiting hair loss. The most fundamental theoretical base of this practice is a phenomenon known as “donor dominance.” This donor dominance theory states that when a hair follicle is taken from anywhere on the scalp and moved to second location on the scalp, it will retain its original, genetic characteristics even after relocation. So these transplanted hair follicles will grow and continue to grow for the rest of the patient’s life. Accordingly, we can take the “permanent hair” from the back and sides of the scalp and move it to the areas of thinning and it will continue to grow for a lifetime and not be susceptible to typical hair loss patterns. The reason that the hair follicles from the occipital scalp, otherwise known as the safe donor area, are permanent is because they are resistant to the hormone that causes hair loss — dihydrotestosterone (DHT). However, it is important to keep in mind that although the transplanted hairs are DHT resistant and they will continue to grow, the non-transplanted hairs around them will continue to miniaturize and fall out as hair loss is a continuous process. Accordingly, the hairline design and the planting of the grafts must be planned with an artist’s eye and the future in mind because your transplanted hair should perfectly blend into whatever the future holds for your hair loss pattern.

Hair transplants are permanent procedures. Accordingly, it is pivotal to find an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Marc Dauer. In our practice, we deal exclusively with Hair and Eyebrow Transplants. We believe that in order to achieve the best results it requires a singular focus, and for that reason, we do not perform any other cosmetic procedures. Our patients come to us from all over the United States and the world. Our goal is to achieve a completely natural result with as much density as possible. We feel these goals are best achieved when the hair transplant treatment plan is individualized.
