Greetings,

This is an unusual case and the first time I have ever seen a patient with scarring from small pox. This patient contracted small pox as a child in a foreign county and subsequently had severe facial scarring secondary to the infection. As a result of the scarring he lost almost all of his eyebrow hair. He presented to me in his 40’s to re-create his eyebrows not only to improve his appearance, but as a first step in eradicating the constant reminder of his childhood infection everything he looks in the mirror.

I explained to the patient that I typically see reduced growth through areas of scarring, but that transplanted grafts still grow through scars, and I have had good results placing grafts into scars.

Since the patient likes to cut his hair short we opted to harvest the grafts via FUE. I used a 0.8mm motorized punch and extracted every follicle personally.

The results shown here are 6 months post procedure. The patient is absolutely thrilled with his results at present. I have told him that he will likely see increased cosmetic density over the next 6 months as more hairs start to grow.

All the best,

Marc Dauer, MD
